Today Madison's righteous indignation was about hungry kids in DC. He even blamed the president. " I bet Obama's kids don't go hungry." Here are the facts: The school breakfast and lunch program is financed by the federal government adminstered by the DC government and school system. The food stamp program is financed by the federal government administered by the DC government. The acknowledge that there are thousands of families in DC that are eligible that have not appplied for the assistance. Why? They may be to rpoud,don't want THE GOVERNMENT in their business, may not know that they are eligible or engaged in some illegal activity. The federal government through the IRS allow tax deductions for contributions to non-profit organizations. Contributions can include food. Further there are feeding centers throughout DC where kids can get nutritious meals. Under the faith based initiative church can apply for federal grants to buy food to feed hungry kids. There must be at least 100 churchs that have kitchens, volunteers, senior citizens and concerned citizens. Then there is individual charity care. The Obama's have feed more under priviledged kids in the White House than all of the previous first families combined. Concerned citizens could go out and find hungry families and bring them to their homes for a meal once a day, a week or a month. Even prepare food on paper plates and deliver them to hungry kids and families. One caller tried to explain this but, he was summarily ridiculed ," He's not feeling it." Another caller tried to tried to ask why a store stopped giving his group of volunteers food because of taxes. Obviously they are not a 501c3 non profit so they could not give a tax deduction certifcate to the store ine xchange for food. He was dismissed without a chance to explain. I have no doubt that there are hungry kids in DC. So Madison should do some homework and find out what is working, what needs more money or better procedures, then use his bully pulpit to lobby congress, the DC government or rally concerned citizen instead of blaming the president.
